Neighborhood updates and upcoming events

It has been a very busy end of summer/start of autumn season for me personally, and I certainly hope it has been just as busy and productive for all our neighbors! As we enter the even busier holiday season, I wanted to take a few moments to bring everyone up to date on happenings around in our square mile of Nashville.

Tomorrow is Halloween, and whether you celebrate the day or not, it’s important to be mindful of those who may be partaking in the day and evening’s activities. Here are some things to keep in mind –

  • There will be kids out in the neighborhood after dark, so please watch out for the little goblins when driving. Please be mindful of your speed.
  • Good News Fellowship (located at 1401 Lischey) will be hosting a Cookies, Candy, & Cocoa gathering from 6-8pm for those wanting to take a short break from trick-or-treating or just wanting to drop in for some socializing. Any and all are welcome!
  • Cleveland Park has organized Trick or Treat Stockell Street where a number of neighbors will be passing out candy from 6-8pm along their street.
  • Be aware that you may encounter some young folk carrying blue candy buckets. If you haven’t heard, this is an indicator that the child may be non-verbal. Please be sensitive to the situation and realize that they may not say the traditional ‘trick or treat’ or respond to questions.
  • If you aren’t handing out goodies, please be sure to turn off your porch lights.
  • Lastly, if you witness any mischief, please let the authorities know by calling the non-emergency line – 615-862-8600.

Other happenings coming around the corner –

  • November 5 – Tip-A-Cop is happening at Burger Up (970 Woodland St) benefitting Special Olympics. This is a special fundraising event organized by officers of the East Precinct. They will be assisting the servers at Burger Up by delivering food at the restaurant (they will be neither taking orders nor cooking) and any extra tips (aside from the tip to the employees) will be donated to the cause. For more information, contact Amy Parker at Special Olympics (aparker@specialolympicstn.com or 615-329-1375)
  • November 21 – Our next HHNA General Membership meeting will be held starting at 6pm in the Community Room at Trinity Community Commons (204 E Trinity Lane – enter at the rear-most double doors facing Meridian St). We’ll have a crime stats update from the East Precinct, an update from our newly-elected Councilmember, Sean Parker, an update on the ‘water tower project’, and more. I do try to keep these meetings to one hour. Contact me for more information (contact info below).
  • December 17 – HHNA will host a special holiday meal with Trinity Eats at Trinity Community Commons (204 E Trinity Lane). If you didn’t join us last year, you missed quite the meal! The menu will consist of roast pork loin, buttered carrots, mashed potatoes, and green beans with various cobblers for dessert all while listening to some great holiday music. While HHNA will provide the entree and sides, we are asking volunteers to either help us prepare the food and/or bring a cobbler. Don’t worry if you don’t have a cobbler recipe – I have one that is exceptionally easy and inexpensive. All are welcome whether you bring a cobbler or not. Last year, we served about 85 people and hope to see you at this year’s event! For more information, email me at chairperson@hhneighbors.com or call me at 615-300-7473.
  • December 19 – Our HHNA General Membership Meeting for this month has been removed from the calendar since many neighbors may be travelling and/or celebrating the holidays with friends or family. Come instead to the holiday meal on the 17th!

Wow – lots of stuff happening around Highland Heights. I invite everyone to get involved, meet some neighbors, and help us grow our community in ways that may benefit all of us!

I remain respectfully yours,
